Clams and Cream

Kreme and Kone Store Sign

While on vacation with my family down on the Cape, we visited the legendary Kreme and Kone in West Dennis Massachusetts. Their menu was typical quick service seafood on the Cape:  Haddock, Shrimp, Scallops, Clams and other organisms from the sea (those who know me well know that I’m not a big seafood fan though I do like certain things a couple times a year). I had had the Clam Strip Roll, my wife the Scallop Plate and my daughter, who may be the world’s pickiest eater, had an order Chicken Wings and French Fries.

Served with tarter sauce on the side, the clams I ordered had to be the sweetest I have ever eaten. They really satisfied my desire for clams for a while. Portions were enough for another meal. Though I’m not a scallop fan, my wife really enjoyed her dinner and, like the clam strip roll, had enough for another meal. As any good father does, I sampled my daughter’s chicken wings. I found them to be meaty and crispy. Without sauce of any kind, they were a bit bland. I would have preferred to have buffalo and/or barbecue sauce on them.

We finished our meals with some ice cream. Kreme and Kone offers several varieties of soft serve, unseen at many other ice cream stands. This was a great finish to our meal.

I highly recommend Kreme and Kone for a quick seafood meal down on the Cape. I can’t wait to return.

Bravo to the Folks at Panera

Had the Bacon Turkey Bravo at Panera Bread yesterday and it was DEE-LISH! Any sandwich with bacon and Gouda cheese has to be good. That in combination with the Tomato and Basil bread was just awesome. It was worth the lunch-time wait.

Thanks for a great lunch yesterday in Portsmouth, NH!

Good Italian, Forgetful Staff

I recently visited the Colosseum Restaurant in Salem, NH, with my family as we celebrated Father’s Day. Despite some of my party being nearly twenty minutes late for our reservation, the restaurant held our table. This was nice considering the restaurant was pretty busy for the staff on-hand that day.

Overall, my family and I enjoyed our individual meals which included chicken and veal Colosseum, chicken and veal Parmesan, lasagna and shrimp scampi. The chicken and veal Colosseum was stuffed with prosciutto, broccoli, mozzarella, parmigiano and romano cheese, breaded and sautĕed with mushrooms and wine sauce. I thought this was very tasty. The chicken parm. I sampled seemed a bit thin and a bit dried out though the meat sauce was good.

Bread was served with our meal and salads were a la carte. We did not order appetizers with our meals. The desert tray seemed appetizing but after sampling a few of these I found them to be average and maybe even a little forgettable. Everything was made to order but, despite this, the timing of the meal seemed right on target.

The only bad thing I have to say about our visit to the Colosseum was our server’s forgetfulness. She was very friendly and was knowledgeable about the menu, but forgetting who ordered what, and sometimes forgetting to return with some of the deserts we ordered cast a shadow over the meal. However, I thought the food made up for this.

I’d say if you looking for a descent Italian dinner in the area, give this place a try. The entrees are cooked to order and the staff could probably carry some paper with them as they take orders, so bring your patience with you as well.

I’d give it 3-stars overall.

They Did It!

It’s a great day to be a Bruins fan. Boston maintains it’s status atop the list vying for the distinction of “Titletown” as they accomplished a championship in all four major sports in the last six years. Quite an accomplishment for the teams involved and the city. Congratulations to the best Bruins team I have ever witnessed in my 35 years of following the team (I was a bit young to remember the Orr years).

It’s a little hard for me to believe how the Vancouver Canuck fans reacted to the stunning loss. I guess when you’re not used to bringing home championships you really don’t know how to act. I don’t recall riots in the streets when the undefeated Patriots lost to the Giants in the Super Bowl!

Anyway, it will be great to have another parade in Boston and, like the Red Sox in ’04, Bruins fans will savor the win.

Let’s Say You’re Traveling to the Cape

My family and I love Cape Cod. We love everything about it: the beaches, the shops, the relaxed atmosphere, the traffic. Okay, maybe the traffic we could do without. When we get down there, though, we often feel the need to take in the local sites and certainly the local fare. When you’re on the Cape, it’s all about the seafood. While I’m not a big fan of seafood I can usually find something on the menu for a landlubber like myself. We’ve tried several places in the immediate Hyannis area but was looking for suggestions maybe a bit more off the beaten path, more central and eastern side of the Cape.
